Ramadan Reflections Journal
The blessed month of Ramadan is once again upon us insha'Allah. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and one which is most eagerly anticipated by Muslims world over. It is the forth of five pillars of Islam and compulsory for all healthy, able Muslims to fast throughout this Holy month from sunrise to sunset.
Ramadan is also significantly known as the month whereby the Holy Qur'an was revealed. The Qur’an mentions in Surah Baqarah;
“The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So, whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you, and perhaps you will be grateful.” (Al Qur'an 2:185)
It is the blessed month of Ramadan that offers the believer the opportunity to slow down and reflect on ones existence. A chance to purify and nourish the soul and re-establish relationship with Allah SWT by seeking Allah's forgiveness, increasing in extra prayers and Dhikr, Qur'anic recitation and giving charity.
Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said; "Anyone who fasts during this month with purity of belief and with expectation of a good reward (from his Creator), will have his previous sins forgiven," "Anyone who stands in prayers during its nights with purity of belief and expectation of a reward, will have his previous sins forgiven." The rewards for good deeds are multiplied manifold during Ramadan.
For Muslims, Ramadan is a golden opportunity to break old habits and start a fresh. One should focus on setting simple yet achievable and realistic goals that they are able to maintain consistently. Once this has been established and new habits have been developed, the aim should be to carry these good habits forward once Ramadan is over.
