What is an Aqeeqah (Aqiqah)?

The word Aqeeqah (also spelt as Aqīqah and Aqeeqa) is derived from the Arabic word "ʿAqq," which literally means ‘the ‘act of cutting’ or ‘sacrifice’.

Aqeeqah (Aqiqah) is an important Islamic ritual that involves the sacrifice of an animal, usually a goat or sheep on the birth of a Muslim baby. It is a sunnah to sacrifice two sheep or two goats for a boy and one sheep or one goat for a girl.

According to the vast majority of scholars of Islam, Aqeeqah (Aqiqah) is a highly recommended practice from the sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)). It takes place on the seventh day after the baby’s birth. Naming the baby and shaving their head on the seventh day are also acts from the sunnah. The shaved hair is weighed and its value in gold is given to charity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) offered Aqeeqah (Aqiqah) on behalf of his beloved grandsons Hassan and Hussain (AS).

According to Hadith Tirmidhi: Aqeeqah (Aqiqah) is prescribed for every child. Thus give thanks on its behalf, and remove the harm of it.

What is an Aqeeqah ceremony?

The Aqeeqah ceremony often known as an Aqeeqah (Aqiqah) party is a gathering of family and friends to join in the celebrations, where a section of the meat is shared as a feast. It symbolises the baby’s official welcome into the world and into the Muslim faith. It also serves as a gesture of gratitude to Allah (SWT) for the blessing of a new baby.

What gift do you give at an Aqeeqah party?

Family and friends attending the Aqeeqah celebrations often wish to bring gifts for the new baby, but may not necessarily know what to choose. As an Islamic stationery and gift company, we are often asked by customers for Aqeeqah gift ideas. This can be tricky as most new parents have already purchased clothes for their new born and other baby essentials making duplicate gifts a real possibility. We at Islamic Moments recommend the best gift is an Aqeeqah card or an Aqiqah money envelope containing cash. This gives the new parents the flexibility to buy baby items as and when they need them, alternatively they may want to save the money for their child’s future.

We have a variety of beautifully illustrated  Aqeeqah cards available on our website which can be purchased by clicking the link here.
